Friends of Coconino County Parks is a private nonprofit organization with the mission of supporting Coconino County Parks & Recreation Department’s efforts of land conservation and management, park development and operation, and promoting recreational activities. FCCP accomplishes this through endeavors that include:

  • Creating and implementing outdoor recreational programs.
  • Generating funding resources to benefit County parks.
  • Facilitating arrangements with individuals and organizations for cooperative work efforts.
  • Advocating for parks and open space and supporting the Coconino Parks & Open Space Program.
  • Promoting the conservation and sustainability of County park lands.

Here are some other ways you can volunteer and participate in the Friends of Coconino County Parks:

  • Attend (and/or volunteer at) the Flagstaff Wine & Food Festival

  • Participate in a guided walk or snowshoe hike

  • Be a judge (or enter a sample) at the Coconino County Fair Homebrew Competition

  • Help serve beer and wine at the Coconino County Fair (Labor Day weekend)

  • Make a donation to help improve a County park, trail, or natural area

  • Help clean-up a County park, trail, or natural area

Since its incorporation in 2008, the FCCP has been continually working toward fulfilling its mission and development organizational capacity.   A summary of FCCP achievements to date is presented below:

  • Achieved 501c3 Non-profit status

  • FCCP Benefit Concert/Community BBQ featuring The Gin Blossoms

  • Sponsored a concert by Carlos Nakai at the Pine Mountain Amphitheater

  • Participated in the National Trails Day with Coconino County Parks and Recreation

  • Organized the 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012 Coconino County Fair Homebrew Competitions

  • Administered the 2009, 2010, and 2011 Bike to the County Fair efforts

  • Coordinated and led interpretive and snowshoe walks, and bike rides for the “Explore Your County Park” series of outdoor recreational activities

  • Improvements to Equestrian Facilities at Fort Tuthill through the Coconino Horsemen’s Alliance

  • Presentation to the State Land Department for preservation of Roger’s Lake

  • Acquisition of computer equipment and a part-time, paid staff

  • Co-produced the inaugural Flagstaff Wine & Food Festival, June 19, 2010, at the Pine Mountain Amphitheater
    and independently produced the Second Annual Flagstaff Wine & Food Festival, June 11-12, 2011

    COCONINO PARKS AND OPEN SPACE PROGRAM

    On November 5, 2002, Coconino County residents approved a capital projects initiative to raise the County sales tax a one-eighth of one-cent for County parks.  The initiative passed with 61% voter approval.  The tax raises $33 million over an estimated ten year period at a cost to the average county household of $1.63/month.

    It funds the Coconino Parks and Open Space Program (CPOS) to accomplish two goals:

    • development and re-development of community parks in the County system; and

    • acquisition of open space within critical natural areas in the greater Flagstaff area.

    Years of citizen input and community planning established a shared vision of protecting old growth forests, wetlands, and wildlife habitat to balance regional growth and development.

    COMPLETED PROJECTS:

    • Raymond County Park improvements, $1,200,000 (completed in 2010)

    • Restoration of historic portions of Fort Tuthill and Fairgrounds improvements, $990,000 total cost:  $330,000 funded by CPOS and $660,000 funded by City of Flagstaff (1st Phase completed in 2010, water and sewer infrastructure)

    • Louise Yellowman County Park, Tuba City, $3,196,000 (completed in 2008)

    • Develop recreation facilities at Peaks View County Park, $1,400,000 (initial phase completed in 2009)

    • Wetlands and forested lands near Kachina Village, $1,450,000 (initial phase completed in 2009)

    • Develop recreation facilities at Sawmill County Park, $259,000 (completed in 2007)

    • Construction of Fort Tuthill Amphitheater, $2,842,000 (completed in 2006)

    • Payment of a portion of lease/purchase obligations for Fort Tuthill County Park, $3,000,000 (completed in 2003)

    • Acquisition of wetlands and wildlife habitat at Rogers Lake (completed November 1, 2010!!)

    PROJECTS PENDING ACQUISITION OR CONSTRUCTION

    • Complete restoration of historic portions of Fort Tuthill and continuing Fairground improvements (conceptual design under consideration)

    • Old growth forest near Naval Observatory west of Dry Lake

    • Key wildlife habitat near Walnut Canyon

    • Forested lands on Observatory Mesa
