A new report (pdf) from IBIS World looks at 10 industries in the United States that are demonstrating, as the researchers put it, “exceptionally sour performance.” Some are suffering from trade competition, some — like newspaper publishing — from the advent of new technology.
Newspaper revenue has fallen at a 6.4 percent pace in the last decade as online advertising has proven far less lucrative than print ads. Will any of these industries stay alive? Some, like newspapers, are doing what they can to adapt, such as charging for online subscriptions. Others might need to take drastic measures.

With the slow demise of the printed word comes news of further financial troubles for newspaper publisher Lee Enterprises. The company reported losses in the 4th-quarter, which could be the harbinger of a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing given its crushing billion dollar debt, reports the TucsonSentinel.com.
The Iowa-based company’s operating revenue fell 3.3 percent which translates into an $8.8 million loss for the quarter. Given its current $1.1 billion debt, the down revenue could be seen as the company’s failure to stem the bleeding.
