Music & The Local Economy
It is well known that music has many intangible benefits for a community, but can an economic impact be quantified?
In 2011 The Pepsi Amphitheater at Fort Tutthill County Park has 21,073 paid attendees. ( Note: To gain the management contract Phoenix Promoter projected 38,000 visitors for the summer season venue) . A Rural Policy Institute study found more than half of the tickets sold last year went to out-of-town residents. Although the promoters R-Entertainment did not meet their own attendance projections, the study found that a significant economic impact was still provided to the community of nearly $2 Million. This economic impact was driven primarily by the over 10,000 additional visitors to northern Arizona that came to see various live music acts.
The Orpheum Theater and Orpheum presents also draw a percentage of their attendees from out of town. A two-year review of the Orpheum theater performed last year found that the theater sold 49,796 tickets between October 2009 and September 201 ( AZ Daily Sun Article ) The owners have replaced the roof, expanded the size of the venue to accommodate more people, converted the back office into commercial space, improved the artist hospitality area and upgraded the restrooms as well as the sound equipment.

Note: In an Arizona Daily Sun Article Titled Unmet Expectations. It was suggested that Phoenix based promoter R-Entertainment has plans to reduce ticket prices for locals in an attempt to bring more residents back to the amphitheater. This would be a great gesture for the local community lets hope R-Entertainment follows through but as importantly the promoter steps up its marketing efforts in feeder markets like Phoenix and Las Vegas to bring in additional visitors.
