Rafting the Grand Canyon

A trip down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon sits at the top of many bucket lists, and Flagstaff is the outfitting capital for it. Commercial trips range from a few days on part of the canyon to more than two weeks for the full run, on motorized rafts or oar and paddle boats. Popular dates book well ahead.

Canyon Explorations runs guided Grand Canyon trips with experienced guides and quality gear. Professional River Outfitters has supported river trips in the canyon since 1983 and specializes in outfitting private trips, and Canyon REO provides rafts, equipment, food and transportation for private groups. To run your own trip, you need a private permit from the National Park Service, awarded through a lottery.

Scenic flights and guided tours

Sedona looks even more surreal from the air. Bluebird Air Tours flies private 30 to 45 minute canyon cruises and sunset tours over the red rocks. From Flagstaff, Grand Canyon Adventures runs guided trips to the South Rim, Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend, and Bliss Wine Tours takes groups through Arizona wineries in the Verde Valley.

Horseback riding

Near the Grand Canyon’s south entrance, Grand Canyon Apache Stables leads guided rides through the Kaibab National Forest for all ages and skill levels. It is a relaxed way to see ponderosa country between canyon viewpoints.

Camping and RV parks

Flagstaff. Kit Carson RV Park has shaded, full hookup sites under ponderosa pines on Route 66, pet friendly and close to downtown. Black Bart’s RV Park sits beside Black Bart’s Steakhouse, known for its saloon and musical revue.

Grand Canyon. Mather Campground puts you in Grand Canyon Village, and Grand Canyon Camper Village in Tusayan has showers, laundry and a dump station. Inner canyon camping at Havasupai Gardens and Bright Angel requires a backcountry permit.

Sedona. The West Sedona designated dispersed camping areas, including Angel Valley and Javalina, offer roughly 200 sites across eight areas, and Camp Avalon is a retreat style camping destination.

Adventure basecamps

In Sedona, Red Agave Resort was built for hikers and mountain bikers, minutes from the trails. Sedona Pines Resort and Sedona Springs Resort offer roomy accommodations for families and groups. For more places to stay, see our Sedona and Flagstaff guides.

Winter adventures

When snow arrives, Arizona Snowbowl on the San Francisco Peaks offers downhill skiing and snowboarding just north of Flagstaff, and the forest around the Peaks fills with Nordic skiers, snowshoers and families sledding. Stick to designated snow play areas and never park along highway shoulders.

Seasonal planning

  • Spring: ideal in Sedona and canyon country, still snowy on the Peaks.
  • Summer: peak river season and the best time for Flagstaff and the Peaks. Watch for afternoon monsoon storms from July.
  • Fall: aspens on the Peaks and comfortable temperatures everywhere.
  • Winter: skiing in Flagstaff, quiet trails in Sedona and snow on the Grand Canyon rim.

Adventure responsibly

  • Check fire restrictions. Campfire rules on the Coconino and Kaibab National Forests change through the year, and full bans are common in dry months.
  • Pack it out. Leave camp cleaner than you found it.
  • Respect tribal lands. Many nearby places, including Antelope Canyon and Havasu Falls, are on Navajo or Havasupai land and require permits or tribal guides.
