Why Flagstaff feels different
Most people picture Arizona as saguaros and 115 degree summers. Flagstaff is the opposite. The city sits on the Colorado Plateau beneath the San Francisco Peaks, a volcanic range topped by Humphreys Peak, the highest point in Arizona at 12,633 feet. Summers are mild, winters bring real snow, and the forest starts at the edge of town. That mix is why Flagstaff draws trail runners, families escaping the Phoenix heat, Northern Arizona University students and a steady stream of travelers on their way to the Grand Canyon.
The elevation shapes everything here. The sun is stronger, the air is thinner and drier, and the weather can turn quickly. From roughly July through September the summer monsoon brings afternoon thunderstorms almost daily, so locals plan big hikes for the morning. From late fall into spring, snow can close mountain roads and Arizona Snowbowl opens for skiing.
The world’s first Dark Sky City
In 2001 Flagstaff became the world’s first International Dark Sky City, the result of decades of outdoor lighting rules meant to protect the view from Lowell Observatory, where Pluto was discovered in 1930. The payoff is a night sky you can actually see from town. On a clear night the Milky Way shows up over many neighborhoods, and a short drive into the forest puts you under some of the darkest skies in the country. The Flagstaff photographers behind SKYGLOW have spent years documenting starscapes across North America and the growing threat of light pollution.
Downtown and Route 66
Historic downtown Flagstaff is compact and walkable, with Route 66 and the railroad running along its southern edge. Trains roll through day and night, and they are part of the soundtrack of town. Several landmark buildings still operate as hotels. The Weatherford Hotel, established in 1897, runs three bars under one roof. Hotel Monte Vista sits just off Route 66, while the historic Motel DuBeau and the locally owned L Motel offer simpler rooms within walking distance of everything. For something smaller and more polished, Bespoke Inn has 11 rooms with fireplaces, a short walk from downtown shops and restaurants.
Downtown is also home to Babbitt Brothers Trading, a family owned outdoor gear shop, and to long running bars like the Gopher Hole, a resurrected speakeasy that books live bands, and Pay-N-Take, a coffee shop by day and a bar by night. Flagstaff Brewing Company anchors the downtown brewpub scene. Our breweries and bars guide has the rest.
Where locals eat
Flagstaff’s food scene runs on independent, owner operated spots. Breakfast is serious business here. Macy’s European Coffeehouse and Bakery is a downtown institution, Tourist Home Cafe serves New American brunch with a southwestern lean, and White Dove Coffee has been feeding the east side for a decade. Coffee people should know two local roasters: Firecreek Coffee and Matador Coffee Roasting Co.
For dinner, Salsa Brava has repeatedly been voted best Mexican restaurant by Arizona Daily Sun readers, Satchmo’s handles Cajun and barbecue, Taverna has been a local favorite since 2009, and Fat Olives fires its pizzas in a wood oven. Save room for Chocolita, which makes organic botanical chocolate downtown. The full dining guide covers more than 50 places to eat across the region.
Getting outside without leaving town
The Flagstaff Urban Trails System, known locally as FUTS, links neighborhoods, parks and forest with more than 50 miles of paved and natural surface paths, so you can ride or run from downtown into the pines. The Arizona Trail also passes through the Flagstaff area on its way from Mexico to Utah. Within a 30 minute drive you can start up the Humphreys Trail toward the top of Arizona, wander the easy Aspen Nature Loop near Snowbowl, or grind up the Elden Lookout Trail for a view over the whole city. Our trails guide covers more than 140 verified trails.
Need gear? Snow Mountain River rents and sells new and used equipment, and Absolute Bikes and Single Track Bikes handle bikes, rentals and repairs.
Easy day trips
Walnut Canyon. Just east of town, Walnut Canyon National Monument protects Sinagua cliff dwellings tucked into the canyon walls. The Island Trail loops past dozens of rooms.
Grand Canyon. The South Rim is about 80 miles north, roughly a 90 minute drive. Our Grand Canyon guide covers lodging, camping and the inner canyon.
Sedona. Drive about 30 miles south through Oak Creek Canyon, dropping roughly 2,500 feet from pine forest into red rock country. Start with our Sedona guide.
Practical tips
- Respect the altitude. Drink more water than you think you need and take the first day easy, especially if you are coming from sea level.
- Dress in layers. A 30 degree swing between afternoon and night is normal.
- Hike early in summer. Monsoon lightning is a real hazard on exposed ridges and above treeline.
- Check road conditions in winter. Snow can arrive fast and mountain roads close.
- Keep it dark. Use warm, shielded lights and point flashlights down at night.
Frequently asked questions
