How we list restaurants

Every restaurant here has been checked against more than one source before it appears. National chains stay in the directory because sometimes you just need a fast meal on the road, but they are clearly labeled and always sorted to the bottom so local kitchens get seen first. If you own a restaurant that is missing, it is free to be listed.

Flagstaff breakfast and coffee

Breakfast is a competitive sport in Flagstaff, and a cold mountain morning is the perfect excuse. Macy’s European Coffeehouse and Bakery is a downtown institution with house baked goods and serious coffee. Tourist Home Cafe serves New American breakfast, lunch and brunch with a southwestern touch and locally sourced ingredients. On the east side, White Dove Coffee has been pouring coffee and serving breakfast and smoothies for a decade. Fat Bagels does New York style kettle boiled bagels, breakfast sandwiches and matzo ball soup, and Campus Coffee Bean and Grill keeps students fueled near NAU.

Coffee people should seek out Flagstaff’s roasters. Firecreek Coffee roasts small batches in town and runs its own cafes, and Matador Coffee Roasting Co. roasts fresh coffee and espresso for retail and wholesale. If tea is more your speed, Steep Leaf Lounge pairs tea and teaware with fine art and pottery.

Flagstaff lunch and dinner

For a sit down dinner, Taverna has been a local favorite since 2009, and Fat Olives serves wood fired pizza and an Italian kitchen menu. Salsa Brava has repeatedly been voted best Mexican restaurant and best salsa by Arizona Daily Sun readers. Satchmo’s brings Cajun food and barbecue to the mountains, and Tiki Grill is a family owned spot cooking scratch made comfort food.

Downtown, Urban Pine Eatery earned a best new restaurant vote with salads, subs, pizza and garlic knots, plus patio seating. 1899 Bar & Grill does handheld burgers and comfort food with specialty cocktails. For dinner with a show, Black Bart’s Steakhouse pairs steaks with a saloon and musical revue.

Global flavors

My Pita Wrap serves Levantine Mediterranean food, including shawarma, falafel, kefta and hummus. Asia Station cooks Thai dishes for dine in, takeout and delivery, and Angie’s Lobster brings lobster to the high country at casual prices.

Something sweet

Chocolita makes certified organic, vegan botanical chocolate and truffles with low glycemic sweeteners, with a shop downtown and a second location in town.

Sedona

Sedona has a food scene far bigger than its population. Elote Cafe serves cooking inspired by the markets of Mexico. Chef Lisa Dahl’s Pisa Lisa makes Neapolitan style wood fired pizza, organic salads and gelato. Family owned Hideaway House serves house made Italian dishes on open air patios with red rock views, and Dellepiane has grown from a small burger and empanada joint opened in 2017. Locals send friends to Thai Spices for healthy Thai at modest prices.

Plant based eaters have it easy here. Local Juicery, open since 2014, is Sedona’s original organic juice bar and superfood kitchen. Wildcraft Kitchen is an organic cafe and market with craft coffee, and The Secret Garden Café makes everything from scratch daily. For dessert, Black Cow Cafe has served homemade ice cream since 1998. Beer lovers should stop at Oak Creek Brewing Company or Oak Creek Brewery & Grill.

At the Grand Canyon

Inside the park, Yavapai Dining Hall, the Maswik food court and the Maswik Pizza Pub keep it quick and casual. Outside the gate, Big E Steakhouse and Saloon serves steaks and Italian dishes, and Plaza Bonita serves Mexican food. More in our Grand Canyon guide.

Eat like a local

  • Go early for breakfast on weekends. The popular spots fill fast, especially in summer.
  • Reserve in Sedona. Dinner tables at well known restaurants book up, especially around sunset.
  • Check seasonal hours. Many independents shorten hours in the off season or close one or two days a week.
  • Pace the drinks at altitude. Alcohol tends to hit harder at 7,000 feet.

Pair dinner with a pint from our breweries and bars guide.
